Lord of the Rings

Here I'll put up pictures and match reports from games using Games Workshop's Lord of the Rings rules and figures. These are almost exclusively against Mr G- P- who has a large collection of stuff. The rules themselves are very 1970s, clunky and clumsy, but the published scenarios are usually excellent - perfectly balanced and tense.

Below are pictures from a recent game using Mr G- P- 's very fine figures. Some of Sharkey's ruffians attacked a village in the Shire which, fortunately for the hobbits, forewarned and defended by some sherriffs and Farmer Maggot.

The bad mannies had to cross a fast-flowing stream to get to the village and decided to split their forces, half crossing the bridge, half further downstream. The locals lay in wait for them (below).

Here we see the ruffians crossing the bridge, with their archers exchanging shots with some hobbits behind a hedge off to the right.

The rest of the ruffians crossed the river further down. Their leader, Feargal, managed to slip and fall as he crossed and was washed away; only the use of his solitary Fate point prevented him from drowning, which would have ended the game before it began.

They did make it across, through, with only a few losses, and the hobbits defending the bank prepared for a scrap.

Here is a close-up of the ruffians. As with all of Mr. G- P-'s stuff no two are alike. I'd've thought the halflings would have come off second-best to this lot.

But no. The crafty hobbitses mobbed them and Farmer Maggot waded in with his dogs. At the bridge the hobbit archers had got by far the best of the archery duel and the men crossing by the bridge took quite a few losses from them. Before they could make their way from the bridge to join the fight these ruffians here had also taken a load of losses, taking them to their break-point and of course they bolted en masse.
Another exciting game, and well done the hobbits; poor tactics let the ruffians down and Feargal's only consolation was that he was killed rather than have to report back to Saruman in disgrace.
